ShibataFenderTeam welcomed PIANC WG211 to Hamburg

From October 18th to 20th, 18 members of the WG211 met in person for the second time this year. Hosted by ShibataFenderTeam, the meeting took place at the premises and with the support of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA).

The focus of the meeting was to keep working on the “Guidelines for the design of fender systems”, clarifying open questions and progressing towards the final document which however will still take another year. The updated guidelines will strengthen a sustainable approach and include a holistic view on fender system design.

During these three days, the attendees enjoyed a one-day excursion to the SFT production facility in Rechlin to see steel works and PE production, and even some final products (Donut Fenders); they also had a good time during a private boat tour through the port to see some important locations being of interest to all members, may it be the fender manufacturers, consultants or representatives of ports: the tour took them to the container terminals Burchardkai and Altenwerder, the cruise terminal, the Kattwykbrücke (one of the largest lifting bridges in the world), and Donut Fenders for a historic museum vessel, the PEKING.

      

We were impressed by how many members of the Working Group travelled to Hamburg to join this meeting in person – more than 75%. This once again shows the large commitment of PIANC Working Group members and the importance PIANC has in the maritime world.
